Tour of the Appalachian Trail , passing through the state of Georgia (United States), officially identified as section 17.1 and 16 of the AT in Georgia & North Carolina, within the immense Chattahoochee National Forest.

The stage runs from the Hawk Mountain Shelter, located at an altitude of 3,200 feet, 8.1 miles away from the summit of the Springer Mountain, to Woody Gap, through the summit of Sassafras Mountain (3336 feet) and Justus Mountain (3,224 feet).

Although there are no significant climbs during the day, the profile of the stage presents a characteristic figure of sawtooth, with some small hills and their corresponding hills or steps between mountains (gap, in English).

A short distance from the starting shelter, we found the Hightower Gap (2,854 feet), where roads FR-42 and FR-69 meet, with space for vehicle parking, and two miles later, the Horse Gap (2,673 feet), also with parking space, where begins the climb to the top of Sassafras Mountain, with an approximate height of 650 feet.

From the highest area of Sassafras Mountain you can contemplate a magnificent panoramic view.

On the descent we found a new ¨gap¨, the Cooper Gap, with intersection of USFS-42 and USFS-80 roads, and we started a new climb, towards the summit of Justus Mountain.

A new descent leads us to Justus Creek, with an abundance of rhododendrons and other shrubs, which with their evergreen leaves contrast with the leafless trees, in the middle of winter.

From Justus Creek, the trail begins a gradual ascent of 7 miles, towards Woody Gap, highlighting its passage through the Gooch Gap, with the unpaved USFS-42, and a good parking space and nearby brook. In Gooch Gap there is also an artistic carving made on the trunk, still standing, of a burned tree.
