Tour through sections 8 and 7.2 of the Appalachian Trail , passing through the state of Massachusetts, from south to north. From mile 1,531.0 to mile 1,532.7 measured from Mt. Springer, Georgia.
The march begins at the junction of the Appalachian Trail with Route 7, a short distance from Great Barrington, MA, and very close to the bed of the Housatonic River.
In the first few miles, the trail passes from just over 500 feet, at 1,220 feet from June Mountain, and 1,800 feet from East Mountain, with spectacular panoramic views to the south and west.
On the tour of the East Mountain State Forest, is the Tom Leonard Shelter shelter, with proximity to water and the possibility of camping. The Ice Culch is also very close to the refuge.
We descend smoothly to the height of 1,000 feet, to cross Route 23, and then we resume the altitude between 1,500 and 2,000 feet, to reach the impressive Benedict Pond, with beautiful colors of autumn.
A little before the reservoir, and also shortly after this, at The Ledges, we enjoyed beautiful panoramic views to the south.
The stage concludes at the Mountain Wilcox South Shelter, located in the Arthur Warton Swann State Forest.
This refuge, in reality there are two, since a new, much better equipped refuge with bunk beds and a loft has been added at a short distance from the primitive shelter. In the zone it is also allowed to camp, and to make bonfires, and there is latrine and iron box to preserve the food, of the bears and other animals.
The stage as a whole could be considered as difficult between easy and moderate, although it does not really offer any technical difficulty.
