Tour of the Appalachian Trail (Appalachian Trail) as it passes through the states of New York and New Jersey, north to south, from the AT-1,362.20 mile to the AT-1,373.8 mile, measured from Mt Springer, Georgia.

The stage runs through sections 12.2 and 13 of the OT in New York, and section 1.1 in New Jersey, and we do it together with a group of mountaineers from the Appalachian Mountain Club, led by Frank Zarb.

The trail follows the ridge of Bellvale Mountain (known in New Jersey as Bearfort Mountain), and offers beautiful views over Greenwood Lake and Ramapo Hills, from some of the rocky cornices, along the route. In the grove the oaks, walnuts and pines predominate.

Although the elevation changes little between the north and south ends of the section, the route is not easy, with many ups and downs, short, but steep, along the mountainous ridge of Bellvale Mountain, which shows numerous geological marks of the period glacier.

The highest point of the route is the Prospect Rock (1,433 feet)

We begin the tour on the Wildcat Shelter trail, located already on the crest of Bellvale Mountain, and which has space for eight people (very tight), and a large adjacent area, enabled for camping, as well as hoops for fire, latrine and proximity of a source, whose water must be filtered (and even treated, as indicated by some guides).

A short distance from the shelter we will find a very beautiful panoramic view, in the place known as Cat Rocks (elev. 1,080 feet), from which you can enjoy the colorful vegetation, in these first weeks of autumn.

After the Cat Rocks we arrive, following the same crest of Bellvale Mountain, to the promontory known as Eastern Pinnacles (1,294 feet), which gathers a set of rocks, rounded by strong erosion, and showing the traces of the glacial era. From this point you can also enjoy excellent views to the south and east of the hills of the Sterling Forest.

We cross the NY-17A (Mount Peter), shortly after a detour indicated with blue markers, towards the Village Vista Trail, and already very close to the dividing line of the states of New York and New Jersey, we reach the small summit of Prospect Rock , rocky set of more than 350 million years old, formed by red and white quartz stone, which visibly shows the stretch marks formed by the effect of glaciers, with spectacular views to the south (Greenwood Lake) and towards the hills of the Sterling Forest, southeast. On the horizon, the tallest skyscrapers in New York City are perfectly distinguished.

After the dividing line between the states, we enter the route of stage 1 of the Appalachian Trail in New Jersey, in the Abram S. Hewitt State Forest and the Wawayanda State Park, whose offices and parking are reached through a Short path that connects to the AT, identified with blue markers.
