Stage 109

Tour through the section of the Appalachian Trail (Appalachian Trail), passing through the state of New Jersey (United States), in a south-north direction. From the visitor center of High Point State Park, located on route NJ-23, to the AT parking lot located on route NJ-283, very close to the small town of Unionville, NY.

Most of the trail of this stage runs right on the border of the states of New York and New Jersey, in a corridor acquired in 1982 by the state of New Jersey, crossing wetlands, farms and small hills, in a progressive and very smooth decline.

The tour departs from the visitor center and offices of the High Point State Park, in the upper area of Kittatinny Ridge; It crosses route NJ-23 and begins a slight ascent towards the north, in the direction of High Point Monument, obelisk of great size located in the highest point of the state of New Jersey (1,803 feet). The obelisk was built in 1930 with donations from the Kuser family, and is dedicated to the heroes and war veterans.

Just before the base of the obelisk, there is an observation platform, built in wood, that allows you to contemplate a 360º panorama. To the east, the Kittatinny Valley, Pochuck Mountain, and already on the horizon Wawayanda Mountain. To the southeast you can see part of the skyline of New York City. To the southwest, the Delaware Water Gap. To the west, in the foreground Lake Marcia, and in the distance the Pocono Mountains and Pennsylvania. Finally, to the north and northwest, the Catskill Plateau, and in the very first planto the High Point Monument itself.

Continuing on the path, at a short distance we find the detour to the base of the High Point Monument, identified with blue markers.

A little over a kilometer, downhill and next to the path, is the High Point Shelter, shelter with stone walls, built in 1936, with capacity for 8 people, and that has a latrine, ring of fire, and a small nearby stream, for water supply.
