Stage 107

⇐ Link to the previous stage: 106 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - NEW JERSEY - Section 5.2 -From Millbrook - Blairstone Road, and drive on Buttermilk Falls Trail
⇒ Link to the next stage: 108 - APPALACHIAN TRAIL - NEW JERSEY - Section 4.1 - From Gren Anderson Shelter to High Point - Route 23

Section 5.1 and 4.2 of the Appalachian Trail, as it passes through the state of New Jersey. Travel south to north, from mile AT-1314.1 to mile AT-1324.8, measured from Springer, Georgia.
The stage begins at a branch of the trail, called Battermilk Falls Trail, very steep, with a length of 1.6 miles, which leads from the base of the waterfalls to the intersection with the Appalachian Trail (1.6 miles).
The rest of the route is also relatively flat, along the crest of the Kittatinny Mountain, although there are also some intermediate sections with ups and downs.
Highlights on the tour, some of them with beautiful panoramic views, are the Rattlesnake Mountain, Blue Mountain, views of the Ovassa and Culvers lakes, and the great 360 º that can be seen from the top of the fire watchtower (Fire Tower) located in Normanook (Culver) Lookout Tower.
The tour ends at the Gren Anderson Shelter, a shelter built in 1958 by the Green Mountain Club, with capacity for eight people, outdoor space for tents, latrine, steel box to preserve food from the presence of bears (very numerous and active in this area), and small spring located 50 meters from the refuge.
The part of the path that corresponds to the Appalachian Trail itself, could be considered as an easy route, but by adding the ascent section of the Buttermilk Falls Trail, the whole of the stage would be described as “moderated”.
We did the tour with a mountaineering / hiking group from the New York-New Jersey section of the Appalachian Mountain Club, led by Frank Zarb.
