Île d'Orléans is an island in the St. Lawrence River near Quebec City.

34 km long and 8 km wide, it has about 6,900 inhabitants spread over 6 villages. In the summer, with the arrival of holidaymakers as well as seasonal workers, the population doubles. The island, however, remains a highly agricultural place with many crops (potatoes, strawberries, apples, vegetables, vines, berries, maple products ...) and a forest part in the middle.
The bridge of Île d'Orléans, which connects it to Quebec City, was inaugurated on July 6, 1935.
We discover stone houses inherited from the French Regime in the eighteenth century and the Church of St. Peter, the oldest in the country (1717), very popular with the cinema.

The regional county municipality of L'Île-d'Orléans encompasses the island and the six municipalities that make it up are:
• Holy family
• Saint-François-de-l'Île-d'Orléans
• Saint-Jean-de-l'Île-d'Orléans
• Saint-Laurent-de-l'Île-d'Orléans
• St. Petronilla
• Saint-Pierre-de-l'Île-d'Orléans

It was Jacques Cartier who, in 1535, at the sight of this verdant island, nicknamed "island of Bacchus", because of the wild vines that grow there. But long before the arrival of the Europeans, the Amerindians designated the island by the Algonquin word "Ouindigo" which means "enchanted corner". Over the years, the island has accumulated a series of different names. Its definitive name, Île d'Orléans, is due (still) to Jacques Cartier who, on May 6, 1536, renamed it in honor of the Duke of Orleans, son of the King of France, Francis I.
At the beginning of the colonization, the settlers called to populate the island are mostly from Normandy and Poitou.
Île d'Orléans is one of the oldest settlements in New France. Indeed, Sainte-Famille was founded in 1661. There are many farms on the island and a large concentration of stone houses dating from the French regime. More than 600 buildings are recognized by the Québec government as having a high heritage value, including the oldest rural church in New France (Saint-Pierre).
The 1685 census counted 1,205 islanders and 917 head of cattle.
In 1759, the island, after being completely evacuated from its inhabitants before the arrival of the fleet of the Royal Navy, will be occupied by the English, but it remains today only few traces of their passage. The island is still ravaged by British troops. During the sacking of the island by James Wolfe's troops in the summer of 1759, only three out of 350 houses were spared. The homes spared were the Mauvide-Genest mansion and the Drouin house. The church of Saint-Pierre-de-l'Ole-d'Orléans and the presbytery served as a military hospital and headquarters for Wolfe's army.

The economy of Île d'Orléans is mainly based on agriculture (potatoes, strawberries, apples, vegetables, vines, berries, maple products ...), a notable viticulture - some small estates produce local white and red wines, cider production and breeding. Tourism is also an activity of the island, particularly because of the second homes of the inhabitants of Quebec City, which have very pretty houses around the perimeter of it.
