Stage very spectacular. The landscape is gradually changing, but when we cross the neck of Zoji La, 3,540 meters high, we find one of the most radical and impressive landscape changes we have ever seen. When crossing the neck we jump from one universe to another, from the north face of the Himalayas to the south face. In a few kilometers we went from a land more or less untidy (although these final kilometers already began to have some vegetation) in a green and ugland territory, with forests of conifers and glaciers hanging from the mountains. We jump from Ladakh ridge to the lush Kashmir Valley (although politically both are part of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir). Muslim culture in Kashmir has been dominating the region for some days, but the landscape typically in the Kashmir Valley appears suddenly as we jump in the neck.
Upon leaving Drass, the asphalt progressively gets worse until approximately 15 km disappears, although from the town of Matayan (km 20) there is an excellent asphalt again until Gumry, shortly before the neck, disappears again. At the same hill there is a paved section and then it becomes a fine track of dust until 18 kilometers before Sonmarg we find an excellent asphalt.
The climb to the neck is smooth and progressive and we almost did not find traffic, with a landscape that increasingly reminds us more in the Pyrenees. At the first stretch of the descent we find a monumental jam, dantesc, of hundreds of trucks in Indian line (never more so!) For a dangerous track that winds through vertical vertical vaults. As we lower the vegetation, it becomes even more leafy, reminding us a lot about the landscape of the Aran Valley. It is very shocking to us, after weeks crossing inhospitable high altitude deserts without seeing trees.
Sonmarg turns out to be a very touristy mountain spot, located in a very spectacular and frequented environment, especially for the wealthy Indian tourists who flee from the heat of the subcontinent's plans. For this reason, now that the heat has passed, there is almost no tourism and the offer of accommodation is very wide and at very low prices.

Gumry

Gumry is a small camp of the Indian army next to which there is a barbeque carried by the military and where they make different Indian specialties. Next to it there is a memorial in memory of the Indian soldiers who had fallen into war with Pakistan during the years 1947-48.

Mountain pass

Zoji La Pass

The neck of Zoji La is located at 3,540 meters high and remains closed for a few months a year due to the heavy snowfall in the area. It is the neck that connects the Ladakh region with Kashmir and is therefore an important means of communication. It also represents a very marked change in landscape between the lush Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh barren

Realment al saltar el port de muntanya el canvi de paisatge és increïble! La baixada serpenteja per la vall d'una manera espectacular. Paisatges de somni que s'han de veure algun dia!!
