1. About Wikiloc

Wikiloc is a completely free web app to help you discover, post and share GPS data on the web easily and quickly. The goal of Wikiloc is to become a global repository of GPS data where we all can freely find, post, share and download GPS tracks and waypoints from all around the planet.

2. Locations in Wikiloc

In Wikiloc we use the term location to refer to any GPS data like tracks, waypoints (points of interest) or groups of tracks and waypoints. To differentiate the kind of location there are currently three icons: for waypoints, for tracks and for groups of tracks and waypoints.

3. Why could I be interested in Wikiloc?

- With Wikiloc you can:

- And if you are a Wikiloc member: When you upload a track or a waypoint to Wikiloc, it is initially private and can only be seen by you. Later on, if you think other users might find it interesting, you can make it public and share it with all Wikiloc users.

You can always change the privacy, modify or even delete your tracks and waypoints.

- If you already have your tracks and waypoints in another web site:

Think of Wikiloc not as a replacement of any existing web site but simply as a service that facilitates the discovery of tracks and waypoints.

If you already have your tracks and waypoints online in your own website or a third party's and you wish to make them known from within Wikiloc, you don't have to upload again your pictures, videos, descriptions etc... Simply upload the tracks and waypoints in Wikiloc and specify the link (URL) to the web page where other Wikiloc users can find additional information about your track or waypoint.

The picture below shows an existing web page with information about the location being opened when a user clicks on the location's name within Wikiloc. If possible, we suggest that you provide a link that refers directly to the web page related with the track/waypoint and not to another search engine or a home page.

The minimum needed to upload locations to Wikiloc is the track/waypoint's geometry (.GPX file), a name and a short description that gives users an idea of what the location is about.

4. How much does it cost?

Nothing. Wikiloc is a completely free web service.

All tracks and waypoints that you'll find in Wikiloc have been recorded with GPS receivers and published voluntarily by the Wikiloc users community. All data and information that you can find in Wikiloc is free. If you wish to collaborate, the best way is to create your free account and upload your own tracks and waypoints. You can collaborate too sharing your opinion and rating of the tracks that you download and repeat.

5. How to upload your GPS data to Wikiloc?

You can upload your GPS data to Wikiloc in GPX (GPS Exchange Format). There are many commercial GPS programs capable of converting data from/to GPX format. If you don't use one of those, you have some free and excellent choices like G7ToWin or GPSBabel. Click here for help on how to get your GPS data in GPX format using G7ToWin or click here to get help on how to do it using GPSBabel.

- Once you have the GPX file with the data to upload, sign in to Wikiloc with your email and password

- Click on the Upload new locations link:

- In the page that appears, press the "Browse" button and choose the GPX file you want to upload. Click on "Preview Contents".

- It shows up a web page with the list of locations contained in your GPX file (tracks and waypoints). As you can see in the following picture, you have the option to uncheck any locations you don't want to upload at this time:

- Once you've reviewed the contents you want to upload, click on the "proceed and save them" button.

- Up next you'll see your GPS locations under "My locations" tab. The following example shows an uploaded track named "Coast Trail" together with three waypoints. You can realize that the current active location is the waypoint named "Cliff ", shown on map.

- If the waypoints were recorded along or near the track, you'll probably want to group them in one unique location.

6. How to group your locations?

Activate the base track that will contain the waypoints by clicking on its name on the location's list of the left. As you can see in the figure below, I've clicked on the name of the track named "Coast Trail" and this makes the track active, appearing on the map.

Up next choose the waypoints you wish to group with that track. You can do that by clicking on the icon next to each waypoint. The icon changes from to and the waypoints are appearing on the map along the track.

Once you get all the locations you want to group displayed on map, click on the Create Group icon from the icon bar. It appears another page where you can review the options and create the group by clicking the "Create Group" button:

The group is created and from now on you will see it as a unique location. The icon to identify the type of location has changed to "Group" . You can view the group contents by clicking on the + simbol.

Additionally you can create groups with only waypoints or groups with only tracks that you want to appear as a single unit as well.

7. How to edit your locations?

You can edit your locations and modify its definition from the edit page. You can open the edit page by clicking on the icon from the icon bar:

8. How to download locations from Wikiloc and transfer them to your GPS?

You can freely download every public location that you find in Wikiloc by clicking on the download icon . Once you get the GPX file in your PC, you can upload it to your GPS receiver to repeat the route, be guided to a waypoint, explore waypoints near your position, and so on...

You can upload your .GPX file to your GPS receiver using G7ToWin or GPSBabel. To get help on G7ToWin click here and if you prefer GPSBabel click here

9. Wikiloc in other languages

At the moment Wikiloc is offered in English, Spanish and Catalan. If you wish to collaborate by translating Wikiloc to some other language, please contact me  and I'll send you back a text document with the list of phrases to translate. That list is about 8 pages long and the phrases are very short.

The list of collaborators in translating Wikiloc will appear in the 'about Wikiloc' page.
